Water desalination projects, which involve purifying sea hardwater and made ready for distribution as drinking water, can cost a lot.
For example To supply 70,000 homes, a municipal plant treats 12–14 million gallons of seawater daily via Se seawater Reverse Osmosis (SWRO). Water is drawn through marine intakes, filtered, and forced under high pressure through membranes to remove salt, before being remineralized and chlorinated. This "sea-to-home" turnkey system costs $350 Million to $500 Million USD:
Plant ($180M–$260M): Intakes, high-pressure pumps, RO membranes, and brine disposal.
Mains & Storage ($100M–$160M): Pumping hubs, reservoirs, and grid pipelines.
Metering ($35M–$60M): Street lines and 70,000 smart meters.
Permits & Design ($35M–$60M): Coastal engineering and contingencies.
Energy-intensive pumps make operational costs much higher than river systems.
